Bottom's Up to Belichick
In response to: NFL: Pats crush Jets; McDaniels fired
The Pats are good - very good - but who could have envisioned the 45-3 shellacking they put on their bitter AFC East rivals, the New York Jets, on Monday Night Football? Both teams were flying high with their identical 9-2 records in eager anticipation of this epic tilt. Unfortunately, only one team failed to show up. Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does - makes big plays in big games (326 YDS, 4 TD), but there's much more to it than just Mr. Brady.
When you think of having a plethora of offensive weapons you think of trios such as Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez and Michael Turner in Atlanta or Desean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Lesean McCoy in Philadelphia. On paper, the trio of Danny Woodhead, Benjarvis Green-Ellis and Deion Branch looks comical. Don't tell that to Bill Belichick. Woodhead (4 REC, 104 YDS), an undrafted, uber diminutive New York Jet cast-off, is making his former team seem rather foolish for not locking him up in favour of an increasingly ineffective Ladainian Tomlinson and an over-rated Shonn Greene. Green-Ellis (18 CAR, 72 YDS, 2 TDS) is best known for having 2 first names and 2 surnames, but he's making 31 other NFL teams regret overlooking his talents in his draft year. Branch (3 REC, 64 YDS, 1 TD), a seemingly washed up receiver, has revived his career under the guidance of the coach who thought it was appropriate to drop an outspoken, future NFL hall-of-fame receiver in favour of the 9 year product out of Louisville.
Lest we not forget about the lack of star power on the Pats defense. It seems like the flock of first, second and third year players - drafted and undrafted - they've assembled is coming along quite nicely. It's time to give credit where it's due. Bill Belichick - love him or hate him - is STILL far and away the best coach in the NFL. His past assistants - some more talented than others - have landed dream jobs merely by association. Case in point: Josh McDaniels. We may never see McD in the NFL anytime soon...and rightfully so. Belichick is the straw that stirs the drink in New England and that drink may be flowing out of the Lombardi trophy yet again this year.
