Raptors Top Summer League
Summer League has just come to a close and there are many decisions that have to be made throughout the league. Rookies signed and unsigned, young veterans, as well as veterans looking for a team to call home looked to open the eyes of teams across the league. Though every team going into Summer League said that wins and loses didn't matter (which is somewhat a lie), teams with near perfect records must feel a bit better than the rest. Two teams finished with perfect records. The San Antonio Spurs and our very own Raptors finished the tourney at 5-0.
Raptors fans that were hurt by losing a franchise player this offseason, have a lot to look forward to. Here are how the most notable players on the Raptors roster faired:
DeMar DeRozan- 21 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 1.5 APG (all-tournament team honours)
Sonny Weems- 17.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.8 APG
Ed Davis- 12.6 PPG, 6 RPG, 1.8 BPG
Solomon Alabi- 8.2 PPG, 5 RPG 1 BPG
Other notables: Joey Dorsey- 7 PPG, 9.8 RPG
Bobby Brown- 12.4 PPG, 1.4 RPG, 4 APG
This production from DeRozan doesn't come as a surprise to those who watched his solid rookie season. DeMar should have a little more freedom to grow as a player with the departures of Bosh and Turkoglu. Another player who will play a more integral role in the upcoming season is Sonny Weems. A rarely used player in his rookie season in Denver, Weems really flourished with more playing time towards the end of the season with the Raptors last season.
Rookies Ed Davis and Solomon Alabi both had strong Summer League showings- most notably on the defensive end. However both showed nice touch on the offensive end as well. Rounding out the Summer League were Joey Dorsey and young journey-man Bobby Brown. After watching Dorsey in summer league, it looks like he is a carbon copy of Reggie Evans- just younger and healthier. He finished tied for 1st in the league with 9.8 rebounds per game and definitely opened up some eyes. Brown who has struggled to find a stable team (4 teams in 2 seasons), made a strong statement that he can be a 3rd or even back-up point guard in this league.
Next up for the Raptors is training camp in about 9 weeks. Wooo!
