New Look Raptors? Hmm, maybe not completely.
If you're a Toronto Raptors fan like myself, yesterday was a great day. Days after Chris Bosh had darted to join the superstars in Miami, Raptors fans were a bit skeptical about the future of their team, to say the least. But, like what Bryan Colangelo had done the previous offseason, it appeared he had turned water into wine!
Reports surfaced that he had moved disgruntled Hedo Turkoglu and his 4 year $43 million contract to the Suns for sharp shooter and forgotten man- Leandro Barbosa. The deal would swap Turk's 4 years for Barbosa's 2 and save the team $29 million over the next 4 years.
Before Raptors fans could land from their joyous jump, more news had swept them off of their feet. Fan favourite Jose Calderon and his $30 million over 3 years remaining had been shipped to the Bobcats for jack of all-trades- Boris Diaw and big man- Tyson Chandler. The news was even greater because it seemed that the Raptors had found the presence to man the paint and shift Andrea Bargnani back to his natural power forward position.
However, later last night the deal had fallen apart because owner Michael Jordan had second thoughts. Many reasons for the halted progress were speculated. Some said that Jordan was trying to squeeze more assets out of the Raptors and others thought that coach Larry Brown did not want to part with Chandler.
Regardless of the reason, it seems that the raptors have to look elsewhere to find the centre they've been searching for. When you look out the window for Raptors fans today, you may see them looking around. It's not that they're paranoid, but they're not sure whether or not to moonwalk down the street. My advice would be to just shine those shoes and wait- because more change is coming! Shammmon-ah, hee heeee! (my attempt at a Michael Jackson reference)
