Re: Response to "The Truth About Fedor Emelianenko"

Let me start out by saying your piece is well written. I'm not going to come on here and call you an idiot, which I guess is my mistake considering you all but did that with me, which I didn't particularly appreciate, but ses la vi.

First and foremost, let's start with Fedor. I never once said he wasn't the best heavyweight of all time, infact, although I didn't come right out and say he was THE best, if you re-watch my video I take a pause to say that during his peak, he was among the best fighters of all time.

That's not the present day though first and foremost. Now, he's a 33 year old that takes three quarters a year between each and every fight now. He's also a guy that, realistically, hasn't fought anyone that belonged in a cage with him in...six years I'm going to say? Nogueira being the last real competition? Maybe Cro Cop five years ago?

In his last couple fights he's looked vulnerable against pretty lame duck competition. Brett Rodgers had him in pretty bad shape a few times in their match, and Arlovski was winning the standup until he tried a stupid flying knee and got caught.

Frankly, the real problem with all that is, my argument isn't that Fedor sucks. It's that he's not ready, or able, to take on a Brock Lesnar. He's never fought anyone like Lesnar, because that individual just doesn't exist.

Brock Lesnar, you can say what you want about his 4-1 record, and I'm sure a great many MMA fan have fun with that fact, but quite frankly if you can't see what Lesnar brings to an MMA cage that makes him different than anyone else in the sport I really don't know what to say. Certainly he's "green", he doesn't have a ton of experience yet, and ontop of that, we now have no idea what kind of shape he's going to be in coming off the health problems he's faced.

But if Lesnar is right, he's a 265(read : 280) pound fighter whose got alarming speed, an incredible wrestling background that gives him all the tools to control fighters. He's huge and fast, so any time he shoots he's got a remarkable chance of being successful, and once he gets to the ground on top, he knows how to control a fighter(as seen in his complete tooling of Heath Herring and Frank Mir the second time), and he knows how to use that massive frame to make him being on top that much worse.

Is Lesnar a perfect fighter? No, probably not. But if he and Fedor were to step into the cage, I see the same thing happening to Fedor that happened to Mir(who is also a very talented fighter), in that his sheer size and wrestling ability completely negated any skill disadvantage he may have.

As for Overeem, he presents a different challenge. As I mentioned, both Arlovski and Rodgers looked fairly good on the feet against Fedor until mistakes. Overeem is much, much more refined on the feet. He's beaten legends of kickboxing in K-1(his win over Peter Aerts last year), he's got speed and power on the feet, but he's much more technically sound to avoid the same huge mistakes that cost Arlovski and Rodgers. If Fedor decides to go to the ground, Overeem's got a solid enough ground game, and is dangerous on the ground to make the fight competitive.

Again, all this is ultimately guess work because methinks we'll never see Lesnar vs Fedor in a cage. That said, you can certainly disagree. Fedor hasn't lost in 10 years so I know it's not a popular stance to take that there is anyone that can beat him in MMA right now. But with that said, I do think that the sheer size and athleticism of the current "new wave" of heavyweights, there are a few guys that would provide terrible stylistic matchups for Fedor, and Lesnar is certainly one of them.
