Response to "The Truth About Fedor Emelianenko"

This is my response to this video put up by Kevin Brown. It's 1:30 in the AM here so bear with me if this isn't well articulated but I needed to say something about this.

First of all, In no way should this be titled "The Truth About Fedor Emelianenko" when it's all guess work. It should be called "The Speculation About Fedor Emelianenko."

So let's get into the meat and potatoes of the video.

To say that Fedor Emelianenko isn't the best heavyweight in the world is just so asinine and ridiculous that I struggle to intelligently counter such a point. Brock Lesnar is pretty much universally seen as #2 in the heavyweight division right now. So I can only assume that you consider Lesnar above Fedor if Fedor isn't number 1. So you're telling me that a 4-1 fighter is the best heavyweight in all of MMA? Brock Lesnar, the same man that struggled with an ancient Randy Couture. Brock Lesnar beat Frank Mir to get to the #2 spot. Frank Mir got to be into the top 10 for beating a nearly crippled and faded, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. I don't want to pick out every little detail of every UFC heavyweight's record but I feel it's necessary. Lesnar is now at #2 because he is a pay per view draw. He was given his title shot against Couture because UFC wanted to quickly make some money on a Couture comeback and Lesnar was their only other significant heavyweight draw available.

You made size and athleticism two big points in the video when talking about hypothetical match-ups pitting Fedor against Overeem, Carwin, and Lesnar. But let's put things into perspective.

Alot of people are jumping on the Overeem bandwagon because he's won a bunch of fights against overmatched opponents (Brett Rogers included). Need I remind you that this is the same Overeem that was tapped out with a keylock from guard by Fabricio Werdum. It's the same Overeem that Sergei Kharitonov sent flying through the ropes in K-1 after knocking him out. Alistair Overeem is a good heavyweight with some quality stand-up skills but he's never beat anyone with the resume and well-rounded abilities of "The Last Emperor".

Shane Carwin is pretty much in the same boat. He's beaten two heavyweights in his entire career with any shred of talent. He's never been out of the first round. He was tagged twice with the same straight right hand from Gabriel Gonzaga that made his eyes dance around in their sockets like John Travolta in "Saturday Night Fever" and then proceeded to get taken down by a much lesser wrestler.

Am I saying Fedor is the pound for pound best? No. I've made a video on Youtube giving my sentiments on that debate. But to say he's not the best heavyweight in the world is crazy considering the opposition. I also think it's crazy to not say he's the best heavyweight of all time. Who else is there? Nogueira is the only guy that can come close to the resume of Fedor and he's dominated him twice. How about former UFC champions like Mark Coleman, Andrei Arlovski, and Tim Sylvia? All have been beaten. Brett Rogers, Mirko Cro Cop, Mark Hunt, Kazuyuki Fujita, Heath Herring, Semmy Schilt; all have been beaten.

In my opinion, consistency is the toughest thing in MMA. No one ever stays undefeated. Not one MMA elite MMA fighter has ever left the game with a Rocky Marciano type of record and they probably never will. All the current top 10 pound for pound fighters have lost. Georges St. Pierre, Anderson Silva, B.J Penn, Jose Aldo, and Mauricio Rua have all experienced the taste of defeat. However, Fedor Emelianenko stands without a serious legitimate loss in his 33 fights unless you count an illegal blow from Tsuyoshi Kohsaka that caused a fight ending cut in 2000. I do think Fedor will lose at some point. The man's 33 years old and has consistently taken 5-8 months in between fights while facing elite heavyweights, including the upcoming challenge in Fabricio Werdum. In all honesty though, if Fedor was matched up with anybody in the heavyweight division in the next two years, I'd comfortably pick him to win every fight.

I'll restate this point again, I don't believe Fedor is the best MMA fighter of all time nor the pound for pound best right now. Both those honors probably belong to Anderson Silva or Georges St. Pierre. However, "The Last Emperor" has to be considered the best heavyweight of all time and if you disagree, make me a strong case telling me otherwise.
