Capital Collapse! What next for the Washington Capitals?

It's certainly wonderful for Hockey Fans when NHL playoff hockey is the headliner in most sports papers and websites this morning. That usually NEVER happens in a continent where the NFL draft breaks all records for viewership! For those of you who missed it, game 7 between the Caps and Habs was simply one of the greats. Halak stood on his head yet again proving that Carey Price will most likely be packaged in a trade for a top forward next year. Congrats to the Habs, no one expected this even though every Canadian was hopeful.

The bigger question now surrounds the Capitals where both Mike Green and Alexander Semin were a no show. Both are in contract years and in begs the question, do you pay top dollar for players who are absolutely skilled but disappear during the playoffs (Illya Kovulchuk anyone?) Certainly the Caps have some decisions to make after Ovechkin and Backstrom, not the least of which deciding whether Varlomov will be the goalie of the future. The Kid looked shaky at best, losing a contest where the shot total favored the home team 41-14.

It's a salary cap world sports fans, and the Caps just like the talent laden Penguins will have to make some decisions on who to keep and who to trade. I would be very surprised to see Semin and Green in a Caps uniform after next year.

Enjoy this Habs fans, I will keep my enthusiasm in check until they push the Penguins to a 7th game. Maybe then my Canadian loyalties will come flappin out!
