The biggest surprises of the NFL draft so far? Drumroll please!!
Day 1 of the 2010 NFL draft was an eventful one. We're at pick 33 and Rams are up to bad for Day 2. There were some major surprises of the draft and a few minor ones, let's go through the day that was on draft day 2010!
Biggest Surprises of the Draft?
Oh God there were a few, Eric Berry going to Kansas City at numbe 5 has to rank up there, but this is a great move by Scott Pioli. I really like this pick because the safety play for KC was atrocious last year. Don't worry about the naysayers saying that safety is not worth a top 5 draft pick, because Eric Berry is that special. They say he could be the next Ed Reed, but I say Nyet, he could be the next Derrick Thomas for the Chiefs.
The Chargers moved up and took inside runner Ryan Mathews out of Fresno State. Now I know the Chargers let go of LT and god knows Darren Sproles doesn't like taking hits up the middle, but this is a stretch at pick number 12. Mathews would have been available late first round or early second round. This is a surprise move by the Chargers for sure. Look for Mathews to be a decent inside runner on short yardage situation but won't be that game breaking back you should be looking for out of a top 15 pick.
MIle High Gamble!! Tim Tebow instead of Jimmy Clausen? Taking a QB that has no experience running an NFL offense, with a suspect arm, terrible showing in the Senior Bowl? This had to be the shocker of the night. Denver is touting the "intangibles", but there is no subsititute for talent and a cannon arm, we'll see how this goes.
Biggest Loser of the Draft?
Where the heck is Jimmy Clausen? The Notre Dame alum with the fluid arm, great accuracy and supposedly a lock for number 2 QB? The funny thing is that many had Clausen ahead of Bradford in terms of arm strength, accuracy and overall QB play. What the teams didn't like is Clausen's arrogance and unwillingness to be coached. He is also an inch and a half short, so that may have had somethinng to do with it. I suppose Clausen knew that he could fall past the 1st round since he didn't attend the draft in person. His attitude has cost him millions of dollars in guaranteed money, look for a team in need of a solid QB prospect to now move up to get him, thinking Buffalo or maybe even KC. I do know one thing for sure, Brady Quinn came out ranked high and look what happened to him, maybe the scouts know something we don't.
Honorable mention has to go to Brian Bulaga, LT out of Iowa taken by the Packers 23rd overall. Near the draft, he was ranked just below Russel Okung and Trent Williams, but fell down the ladder. They say his footwork is atrocious and he lacks real athleticsm. Didn't they say the same things about a guy named Joe Montana??? Forget all that, Bulaga is an intense, hard working young man, he's going to be a great pick up for the Packers.
Biggest Winner in the Draft
Has to be Tyson Alualu from California, taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tyson who? yeah, exactly. I bet he turns out better than Tyson Jackson whom the Chiefs has last year.
Number 2 is Rolando McClain, linebacker out of Alabama taken by the Oakland Raiders. CJ Spiller was still on board, Jason Paul Pierre was still on board, and yet the Raiders do something out of whack again by taking an interior linebacker that didn't come with much hype. Oh don't get me wrong, he's good, very good...but a later first rounder, early second rounder in my books.
So, with much anticipation and drool coming out of my mouth, I look forward to round two. If Jimmy Clausen is still on board, the Chiefs need another prospect at QB to give Mr. Cassel some competition. Let's see how the draft unfolds!

There's no way that Trentative Edwards is the starting QB for the Bills this year. It'll either be Brohm (kill me now), Garcia (ugh) or McCoy/Clausen - if they move up to take either. It's definitely going to be a bumpy ride the next couple of days. I think both the Chiefs and Bills will be looking at DT Terrance "Mount" Cody from Alabama. Dude is 6'5 360 lbs and takes up two blockers by default. Much more effective than Glenn Dorsey or Kyle Williams in the 3-4

CJ Spiller is a game breaker, great speed, he's going to be a winner! great pick up by the Bills, though I was surprised that Clausen wasn't picked up by them. I suppose Chan Gailey likes what he sees in Captain Check down? lol The Chiefs need EVERYTHING, I'm hoping for a LT/DT as well, maybe a good linebacker in the mix, but I really think Berry is going to be the difference maker!

Great analysis, Lord Megatron! I wouldn't at all be surprised if the Chiefs end up taking McCoy or Clausen. Eric Berry was hands down the best safety in the draft so you can't really go wrong with that pick. The Bills front office were said to be "heartbroken" after Tebow was nabbed by the Broncos. I predict that the Bills draft OT/DT in round 2 and take QB Tony Pike in round 3. Dude is a leader that just needs to put on some muscle. In other words, he's a little like Jesse/Moshi.
