Lack Of Respect For Our Boys!

This is an article I sent to both my local newspapers today here in Chilliwack, British Columbia, 2 days after Game 4 of the opening round playoff series for the WHL's Chilliwack Bruins and Tri City Americans!

Nearly 21 years into my life and also into my hockey fandom, I am astounded by the lack of respect that so called “fans” actually show when attending a hockey game! I speak of this week’s Game 4 on the WHL Opening Round Playoff Series between our Chilliwack Bruins and the Tri-City Americans! The 3rd period began with the B’s down 2-0, and it quickly ended up 3-1! Forty-five seconds remained, our goalie had been pulled and the remaining minute of regulation loomed, but not before Coach Marc Habscheid took a timeout. Down by two goals with only a very small amount of time left, send “fans” filing for the doors. In a city that is supposedly known for its faith, which I personally don’t share, I was absolutely disgusted to see so many people leaving Prospera Center without giving our boys the chance to pull off a miracle comeback in the final minute. Earlier in this series even, Tri-City scored 4 goals in a span of less than two minutes, so surely, we could score half that many in half as much time. Last week, the Detroit Red Wings scored twice in 5 seconds against our beloved Canucks. What I’m trying to say is that in the game of hockey, which I am more familiar with than most people, and I say that very confidently, anything, and everything is possible. Even three quarters of a minute left can make the difference in a game. After we scored the tying goal with eleven seconds left, I heard a girl around my age tell my friends and I that her dad has left the arena just 30 seconds earlier during the Chilliwack timeout and I thought to myself, “What a loser!” Most people paid a modest 12 dollars to watch that game and to leave before the game is over, even when there is only a minute chance of coming back, astound and as I said before, disgusts me. You people who leave are NOT “fans.” I’m all for random people coming to watch a hockey game just because it’s something to do. You don’t have to be a fanatic to come watch, but if you do, at least have the decency to stick around until the final horn and show OUR boys the respect they deserve. GM Darryl Porter was quoted in today’s Chilliwack Times as saying that that was the loudest he’s ever heard Prospera Center, and maybe if those several hundred people had actually stuck around, it would have been just a little bit louder. GO BRUINS GO!
