Alex Ovechkin Needs To Sit Out The Remainder Of The NHL Season.

Another week, and another example of changes needed in the NHL to curb dirty plays. Alexander Ovechkin's hit from behind has placed Brian Campbell in a position to miss the rest of the regular season, and perhaps the playoffs. Being that this is now the third misconduct this year for Ovechkin, and he has already had a 3 game suspension from earlier this year, the time must now fit the crime. I recall warning Alex earlier this year about playing dirty, and that he needs to be an advocate for fair play, not a repeat offender of cheap shots. It would send a proper message from the league to suspend Ovechkin for the remainder of the season, but I'm not holding my breath. The fact that there was no suspension for Matt Cooke's headshot on Savard, it doesn't give me much hope that the league will do what's right in this case either. I was proud of Don Cherry calling out Matt Cooke on Coach's Corner, and I know there aren't a lot of Cherry fans out there, but the guy calls it like it is, and Matt Cooke has been a dirty player for a long time. I was hoping that Ovechkin would change his ways permamently, but I guess I was wrong. Now, I find myself losing even more respect for for the so called "Great 8", and the once comparisons to the likes of hockey's greats like Gretzky and Lemieux, will soon be replaced by comparisons to the Cooke's and Marchment's of the world. If the NHL looks the other way on this incident, some player on some team will one day exact his own revenge on Ovechkin, and then maybe the league will take notice. I hope by then, it's not too late to save the reputation of the once great game of hockey.
