GM's need to do something this time.
Once again, another dirty play grabs the headlines in the NHL, but this time I hope that the timing of the incident helps change the game when it pertains to safety. Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke took out Boston's Marc Savard in the third period of a close game on Sunday. The dirty hit was away from the play, so there was no penalty, but a review will most likely result in a suspension of Matt Cooke. Now Cooke is a repeat offender, and so this must be taken into account. What should happen is that the suspensions should have a three tier assesment. The severity of the play, is the player a repeat offender?, and then a "time fit the crime" consideration where if the victim is out for a period of time, that the suspension should be considered for that length of time as well. The GM's need also push for the instigator penalty to be removed also, to help curb the targeting of certain players. Last night, the Boston Bruins could not afford to go after Matt Cooke themselves, in the fear that they would incur a penalty at a crucial time in the game. Something needs to change very soon, before things get even more out of hand. I will be broadcasting more hockey tomorrow.
Cheers,
RD
