i know this is a week old but the reason i voted for megatron as opposed to jaz was not because i prefer soccer to hockey (quite the opposite actually), i just purely think megatron made the more valid points tis what i base my votes on everytime unless its something i already have my mind made up on...and even then i still hear both sides of the argument and have occassionally been convinced otherwise

Actually, one that I would even put above Tour de France, is the AMA Nationals (motocross). Those guys are conditioned just as well as marathon runners (anyone that has rode a dirtbike on a track for any amount of time will know what im talking about) and the consequences of crashing are so high. There are many bones broken and people getting paralyzed every year in the sport, there is lots of competition, and one crash can cost you the championship, not to mention the use of your legs. I am more sore after an hour of riding my dirt bike than playing hockey or soccer. Motocross is one of the most dangerous sports in the world and it takes so much talent. However, the only reason I choose hockey over it is because there isn't as much fan base for motocross (although it has grown a lot in the last few years).

Great topic, looks like everyone is pretty passionate about this one. Let me throw another one in the mix. What about the Tour de France? A grueling endevour, constant pain, that could be in the mix.

I have to comment on this as well... "Many hockey players gets injured at the beginning of the season simply because they haven't conditioned properly during their summer break. -Silkyjo". Hockey players are some of the best conditioned players in the world. If they get injured, its normally because they got hit into the boards and got a concussion, or they broke their hand in a fight...or took a 100mph slap shot to the face. None of which have ANYTHING to do with conditioning. I think perhaps you might be watching the american football and thinking its the same as european football...

I played soccer for 8 years indoor and outdoor as well as hockey for 6 years. Hockey is definitely a harder work out than soccer. Soccer is NOT a contact sport. A contact sport is where hitting another player is encouraged. That is like saying Basketball is a physical sport...sure they tough each other and there is physical contact...doesn't mean its a "contact" sport though. Also, lets take a good soccer player that has never played hockey, and a good hockey player that has never played soccer. The hockey player will be much better at soccer than the soccer player at hockey. Reason being is because hockey takes a lot more skill and soccer players are used to the fast pace and hard hitting. FYI...Most (if not, all) hockey players are very good soccer players. What does it tell you when you see hockey players playing soccer before a game for a warmup?

now this is exactly the debate I want to see. We have some great arguments and points of view, all very valid from everyone who has made a comment on this battle. I'd like to see some other's taking this battle and putting together their arguments on it. This is awesome!

I agree, physical effort is not the only element to be considered. As mentioned, there are also varied pressures and training. However physical toll, I argue, is a major factor and it differentiates most amongst various sports therefore it needs to be considered to a greater extent. It is futile to argue about how the two sports are the same, so I chose an element where they differ. But I think we can agree that those who vote are voting for the sport they like most.

Hockey is a winter sport, so it's played with seasons starting in early autumn and ending in late spring, with a summer break. Soccer may be once a week, but it's played pretty much all year round, with UEFA championships and World Cup, and of course National and Inter-National championships. African and South African soccer gets even more complicated, it almost happens all year round. Many hockey players gets injured at the beginning of the season simply because they haven't conditioned properly during their summer break. I am not disputing that hockey is a high-impact sport, I am just saying that it cannot be compared with soccer as it requires different levels of endurance and physical requirements. The level of physical effort does not dictate the greatness in achievement in professional sports. There is more to sport than just physical effort, and that element is what should be considered when we speak of achievement.
