If you watch a fight like Jason MacDonald vs. Demian Maia, you can see how excited people get for submissions nowadays.

Being a student of both the stand up and the ground game, I'd have to say there's merits to both. I love nothing better than a well executed sub - where there's absolutely NOTHING the opponent can do to escape, yet somehow does...awesome. But fans in general, I think are in it for the KOs. It's what they understand. There was an article the other day about the simplicity of boxing vs. the complexity of MMA with boxing being summed up as "hit that guy". Now, of course the so-called sweet science is so much more than that, but it is easier to "get" than submission grappling. It's more natural and more accepted in some ways. Although I personally think otherwise, I'm thinking that jhabeeb has this one pegged. (Almost) No one clamours for the fight to go to the ground when two fighters are pawing at each other, but EVERYONE yells for the stand up when the fight is stalled on the ground. People just want something to happen, and it's easier for something to happen during stand up.
