Because fighting for 35 minutes is cruel and unusual punishment!

so why couldn't title fights be 7 rounds and regular fights be 5? I don't see a problem with it.

honestly I don't agree with non title fights being 5 round fights. This is a sport & you shouldn't be able to just make the up the rules as you please. You should earn the right to have championship rounds. Boxing used to fight 15 round meaning that 3 rounds were championship rounds. Like MMAInsight stated, it takes the prestige away from title fights. If anything, you can increase the time limit of the rounds but leave the # of rounds as it is.

if boxers could do it, so could mma fighters. Me never having been in a cage has nothing to do with it.

Why don't you go tell that to the guys who actualy get in the cage, they would have to train for a 10 rnd MMA fight it's not up to you or me it's up to the fighter's.

I dont care if it'll never happen. I don't see why it shouldn't, either. Boxing goes for 36 minutes, so I think they should go for at least 7 rounds.

I think that, maybe, there should be some so-called "superfights" with proven competitors that have a different rule set - e.g. the 5-round fights, but for the vast majority of them, 3 rounds is enough. Yes, there are 3 rounders that are snoozers, but my main concern is injuries. One of the reasons why there are so few in this sport is that the fights don't go on long enough for trauma to accumulate to the point that someone gets really wounded. Sure there are exceptions to every rule, but for the most part, the fights end before people *really* can't intelligently defend themselves. "For the fighter's safety", and all that...

alright, i have to go with Evan on this one. I think the shortness of rounds allow for fighters to make the fight interesting for the 3 or 5 rounds that they fight. And quite honestly, most fights (with some notable exceptions of course) are pretty boring. I don't want to sit through a 5 round snore fest let alone a 10 round snore fest. But that's just moi!
