I wasn't trying to imply that you were making stuff up just to help your case, but in every way that AZ has given Leinart the vote of confidence, the 49ers, starting from Sing down, have given Alex the vote of confidence. SFGate published a report to this effect recently. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/03/30/SPBL1CN196.DTL
There's plenty of speculation with the draft of course, but I think the consensus around those most knowledgeable on the team would claim they will not take a QB at all. Todd McShay may either not agree with that or he may just have been trying to drum up interest by recently updating his mock draft to show the 49ers taking Clausen. That's the only reputable mock draft I have seen showing the 49ers taking a QB. Thanks.

I don't just make things up. Here is one of the reports I read right from NFL.com regarding the status of the #1 job in San Fransisco.

As far as the picks for the draft go, there are of course several opinions out there regarding who to pick, and lots rumors that it may be a quarterback. I do respect your opinion, although I may not always agree with it.

Tim Tebow?! If they took anyone it would be Clausen, and they won't take him because they would already have traded for McNabb and kept both their first round picks if they weren't happy with Smith (and/or Carr). I don't know what reports you're reading, but Alex Smith has been named THE GUY by the coaching staff already. I even said that in my opening statement. This is the first time in his career he won't have to be battling for the starting job. Word out of OTAs is he is taking every rep with the first string offense and is looking more determined and confident than at any point since when he was drafted. If you're going to make arguments, please ensure that your facts really are facts, otherwise it's not a fair debate.

What about Tebow? Anyway, San Fransisco seems to mess around with the heads of their QB's. The reports I'm reading are leaning towards taking a QB with one of their 2 first round picks, and you may be in the know more on that than me, but the fact that Smith isn't named the #1 QB, leads me to believe that They're not fully confident in him. I had Kurt Warner in my keeper pool for the last two years, and I will be taking Leinart now on my roster!

Rodney, I know that you aren't covering your own team, and I respect your willingness to do something like that. But the notion that the 49ers are "probably going to draft a QB in the first round"?! Come on, man! If they wanted a QB, they would have traded for Donovan McNabb. They didn't do that, and they WILL NOT draft Jimmy Clausen. Todd McShay is out of his mind, that's the only reason that idea is getting ANY pub. I guarantee it will not happen and barring injury, Alex Smith will take 90% or more of the 49ers passes.

Guys, I'm not just saying this to kiss anyone's butt, but that was one of the best battles I've ever seen on WTM. You both raised some great points and are charismatic in front of the camera. Picking a winner will prove to be very difficult!

let's not forget that Alex Smith was a number 1 overall draft pick. Bust? Not quite yet, he's had an injury plagued career, but one more year like that and the label is right on.
